The University of Michigan Regents approved a slight tuition increase Monday night.
The regents approved a budget, including a 1.9% tuition increase, on a five to two vote. The board deadlocked on a similar proposal last week.
The budget takes effect Wednesday.
The new budget includes a 5.6% increase in undergraduate financial assistance.
"We are committed to do our very best to make sure that the COVID-19 pandemic does not result in a lost generation of students who were unable to continue or complete their Michigan educations because of the circumstances we all find ourselves in," says U of M President Mark Schlissel.
Still, two regents questioned whether the university should be increasing tuition during a pandemic that is making it harder for some students to afford college and forcing the university to put more classes online this fall.
“Raising prices when we have high unemployment, and many people in the private sector are taking major decreases in compensation and people being sick is just wrong,” says Regent Denise Ilitch.
