If you've found yourself overrun with empty cans and bottles during the stay home order, you're in luck. Michiganders can start bringing back their bottles and cans starting Monday.
Bottle returns were suspended in mid-March to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and allow grocery stores to shift workers to restocking shelves.
The state treasury estimates that Michiganders have accumulated $67 million in uncollected returnable deposits.
Meijer spokesman Frank Guglielmi says customers should expect bottle return rooms to be busy.
"Yeah, we’re anticipating a lot of volume. That could lead to situations where, at a certain point in the day, a specific store has maxed out on the amount of bottles and cans they can take in."
Bottle returns are coming back in phases.
Right now stores are limited in how many they can take back.
Stores can also limit the number of machines they have open, and can periodically close bottle rooms for cleaning.
