U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) says Michigan and other states should accept Afghan refugees.
The Pentagon is evacuating thousands of Afghan refugees daily from Kabul.
“To me, we have a moral obligation,” says Peters. “I would expect all states in this country to step up and do their part and help what is an important national interest.”
Last week, Governor Gretchen Whitmer said Michigan is ready to offer Afghans "a new home."
"People from around the world have come to Michigan over centuries for good-paying jobs, a high-quality education for their kids, and the right to live and worship freely," said Whitmer.
Peters is a member of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee.
He says the committee will be holding hearings in the Biden Administration’s handling of the end of the conflict.
“I know we will be asking questions about what happened and what did not happen, it’s always important to do that,” says Peters. “But clearly right now is about marshalling our forces to get Americans citizens out of there and out of harm’s way.”
