Michigan Radio Intern Opportunities

Michigan Radio offers paid internships for college students and other interested individuals throughout the year. Internships are specifically designed to provide training and experience for people interested in public broadcasting and journalism. Please be aware that not all of these internships are available at all times. Michigan Radio is licensed to the University of Michigan, and is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Check our website (www.michiganradio.org) for complete information on employment opportunities at Michigan Radio.

Digital News Internship

Digital news interns help produce and improve the content available on michiganradio.org. Interns search for relevant news stories and help create daily posts for online news publication. They work with content created by Michigan Radio reporters and format copy, add photos or videos, add links, build maps, create polls, and come up with other creative content that can improve story presentation.  Digital interns also work with reporters to prepare stories for the web ahead of time. They assist in gathering and taking photos, researching stories, shooting video, and posting content online. The intern will develop insights into multimedia production and presentation.

If interested, please e-mail a cover letter and resume to Digital Director, Jodi Westrick: jowest@umich.edu

Newsroom Internship

Newsroom Interns assist with reporting and production of Michigan Radio's daily news product. The internships will require applicants to handle tasks involved in the everyday operation of a radio newsroom. The internships are writing intensive with duties including collecting and editing audio, writing news copy, and attending press conferences.

Internship applicants should have an interest in journalism. In addition to good writing skills, applicants should also be able to work under deadline pressures. We look for someone willing to work twenty (20) to twenty-five (25) hours per week. The hours are flexible depending on the applicant's own schedule and the dynamics of the daily news calendar.

If interested, please send a copy of your resume and cover letter to News Director Vincent Duffy: vduffy@umich.edu

Stateside Production Internship

Stateside is Michigan Radio’s daily talk show. Responsibilities include generating interview topics, researching possible guests, conducting pre-interviews, locating background materials for the host and producers, and building web posts for our Stateside talk show. There may also be opportunities to participate in the technical set up in the studio, as well as with field recording and man-on-the-street interviews. The hours are flexible but three days a week at five hours a day is expected.  This is a great opportunity to get hands on experience for a career as a news producer or broadcast journalist. Hard work and commitment will be expected. Journalism experience and an interest in a career in public broadcasting are a plus. If interested, please send a copy of your resume, a cover letter, and three pitches that fit the show's format and style to Stateside Executive Producer, Laura Davis:  laurawd@umich.edu
