"Believed" nominated for prestigious Peabody Award

The Peabody Awards Board of Jurors today announced that the Believed podcast from Michigan Radio and NPR is one of this year’s nominees for a prestigious Peabody Award in the Radio/Podcast category.

The Peabody Awards are recognized as one of the highest honors in the field of journalism with the most powerful, enlightening and invigorating stories in television, radio and digital media being celebrated each year. This Peabody nomination is a first for Michigan Radio.

A Peabody nominee is chosen for its excellence in crafting stories that explore society’s most important issues. A nominee must be unanimously selected by a jury of industry professionals and experts.

“Across genres and platforms, these are stories that help us make sense of our world, and locate our humanity in the joys and tragedies and struggles of people worldwide,” said Jeffrey P. Jones, executive director of Peabody.

Believed is an award winning podcast collaboration from Michigan Radio and NPR that sought to share the stories of the survivors and families impacted by Larry Nassar’s victimization of young women and athletes over a span of more than 20 years.

Believed was nominated alongside such notable projects as MSNBC’s Bag Man, The Daily from The New York Times, PRX’s Ear Hustle, and “The Runaways” episode from This American Life.

Peabody winners for this category will be announced on April 23, 2019. Winners and nominees will be honored at the 78th Annual Peabody Awards Ceremony on May 18 in New York City. Ronan Farrow, a contributing writer for The New Yorker and an investigative reporter and producer based at HBO, will serve as host.

Since 1940 the Peabody award has steadily grown from being the “Pulitzer Prize for Radio” to recognizing excellence in a wide range of electronic media. The Peabody Awards Board of Jurors selects 60 nominees representing the most compelling and empowering stories released in electronic media during 2018. Nominees are chosen from approximately 1,200 entries across news, entertainment, documentary, children's, public service, and web/interactive programming. From this group, 30 programs are chosen to receive the coveted award.
