Michigan’s two U.S. Senators say the United States needs to do more to confront China on its crackdown in Hong Kong.
Sunday, Hong Kong police fired tear gas and a water cannon at protesters in a popular shopping district, as thousands took to the streets to march against China's proposed tough national security legislation for the city.
Pro-democracy supporters in Hong Kong have sharply criticized the proposal last week to enact a national security law that would ban secessionist and subversive activity, as well as foreign interference, in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory.
Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) blames the Trump administration for having an inconsistent policy on China for the current situation.
“China just sees our lack of consistency and weaknesses as a way for them to step and do what they want, which is a very big concern,” says Stabenow.
Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) says the U.S. needs to do more to criticize the Chinese government’s crackdowns in many places, including Hong Kong.
“The Chinese government has been very aggressive in the last few years, not just with Hong Kong, but in other areas around China,” says Peters.
