Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” was one of the most influential works of the American Revolution. The first edition was published on January 10, 1776, with an initial print run of just 1,000 copies; but within weeks demand soared. The students of Andy Murphy’s POLISCI 495 course co-curated the exhibition “Revolutionary Paine” to document the whirlwind caused by its publication. On view at the Clements January 16-May 8, weekdays from 12-4 pm.
Two-hundred and fifty years ago, America famously proclaimed that “all men are created equal.” That same year, Pennsylvanians led by Benjamin Franklin declared that “all men are born equally free and independent.” This year, Americans are once again discussing issues of creational equality and birth equality—this time in the context of a great debate over the meaning of birthright citizenship. How will the Supreme Court decide this issue? How should it decide? What would Lincoln have thought about the current debate? Yale Law School Professor Akhil Reed Amar will examine these and related questions through the lens of his recent book, Born Equal: Remaking America's Constitution, 1840–1920.

Join us for an evening with the Casa Piano Quartet showcasing the deep musical bond between Antonin Dvořák and Johannes Brahms. This recital features Dvořák’s Piano Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 87, which beautifully incorporates Bohemian folk themes, followed by Brahms’s Piano Quartet in G Minor, Op. 25, known for its fiery Hungarian dance elements. Both quartets possess an almost symphonic quality, ending with lively fourth movements that celebrate their cultural roots. Experience the vibrant melodies and rhythmic joy that highlight the profound friendship between these two iconic composers.
George Lopez’s multi-faceted career encompasses television, film, stand-up comedy, literature, and late-night television. Lopez has broken ground for Latino comics by embracing his ethnicity, confronting racial stereotypes, and fighting for his community on and off the stage.
Lopez created, starred in, produced and wrote for multiple television shows loosely based on his life and family. These included Lopez vs Lopez, featuring his real-life daughter, Mayan, as well as the groundbreaking hit sitcom George Lopez. The latter of the two ran for six seasons on ABC and remains a hit with viewers on both broadcast stations and Nick at Nite. Lopez has also lent his voice to a string of hit animated films, including Smurfs and Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
In May 2004, Lopez’s autobiography Why You Crying? became a New York Times Bestseller. More recently, he released the third installment of his middle-grade novel series, ChupaCarter and the Curse of La Llorona. The series blends humor, folklore, friendship, and mystery.
An icon and advocate for Latino representation, Lopez was the focus of the award-winning documentary Brown is the New Green: George Lopez and the American Dream. In 2005, Time named him one of the 25 Most Influential Hispanics in America and the Harris Poll named him one of the Top Ten Favorite Television Personalities. The following year, Lopez received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He is currently performing stand-up across the country on his comedy tour.
