For the first time, last-minute holiday shoppers in Michigan may have something new to go under the tree: legally purchased recreational marijuana.
Adult-use sales started earlier this month at a small number of stores in Michigan. State law allows a person to give up to two and a half ounces of marijuana flower and not more than 15 grams in the form of marijuana concentrate as a gift to someone 21 or older.
Recreational marijuana shops are reporting strong interest from customers looking for holiday gifts.
“Customers have found the perfect stocking stuffers to celebrate the end of prohibition,” says Summer Ransom, President of Retail for Lansing-based Skymint, “like artisanal pipes, peppermint taffies and premium, whole-flower pre-rolls.”
But while cookbooks and other accessories are selling well, actual adult-use marijuana products may be harder for some shoppers to find.
“Depending on which facility, some are well-stocked. Some are not well stocked,” says Robin Schneider, executive director of the Michigan Cannabis Industry Association, “It’s really going to be hit and miss on what shoppers might be able to find as far as Christmas inventory.”
