There’s a hearing Wednesday in Cincinnati on Michigan’s same-sex marriage ban. The case is before the US Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
A panel of judges will also hear arguments on same-sex marriage bans in Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
In each case, the state is challenging a lower court decision that struck down marriage bans.
In the Michigan case, Attorney General Bill Schuette says courts should defer to the wishes of voters, who outlawed same-sex marriage and civil unions 10 years ago. A lesbian couple sued to topple the ban. They say it serves no legitimate government purpose, but it does cause legal, psychological, social, and financial harm to same-sex couples and their children.
In March, a federal judge struck down the ban, and more than 300 gay and lesbian couples were married before the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ordered a stop to it.
