Saginaw Mayor Floyd Kloc has ordered travel restrictions in the city to combat the COVID-19pandemic.
The order issued on Thursday prohibits travel on county or local roads within the city between 9pm and 6am. The order will be in placefor the next week.
“If you don’t have to be out, stay home. It’s temporarily the law, and it is also the right thing to do,” Kloc said in a written statement on the city’s Facebook page.
The order includes exemptions for essential travel for food, medicine, gas, banking and medical care. Essential workers are also exempt.
Saginaw County has 205 positive tests and seven fatalities. Statewide, the state reported 21,504 positive COVID-19 cases and 1,076 deaths.
The city’s order is in response to Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s decision to extend her stay home order through April 30th.
The governor’s order includes civil penalties and fines for citizens if convicted of disobeying the state's stay home order.
The city’s press release says the Saginaw Police Department will enforce the governor’s order as well as monitor the travel of citizens to ensure the emergency order of the city is being enforced.
“Residents who disregard this order must realize the severity of their actions,” says Mayor Kloc. “They are putting others at risk. There must be consequences to such recklessness in order to protect our vulnerable populations and the public servants who risk their health for our safety."
