The Woodward Dream Cruise is the latest Michigan event to fall victim to the threat of COVID-19.
Organizers Monday canceled the annual event that usually brings hundreds of thousands to metro Detroit to see and be seen in restored classic cars. The Dream Cruise dates back to 1995.
Spokesman Michael Lary says organizers were not pressured into canceling over concerns about COVID-19.
“This is about what’s in the best interest of the ‘We’ not the ‘Me’,” says Lary.
Lary concedes canceling the Dream Cruise is yet another hard economic hit for businesses along Woodward Avenue that usually see a spike in business during the multi-day event.
And just because it’s not official, doesn’t mean that many cruisers won’t take a drive down Woodward in August.
Michael Lary admits the group’s Facebook page is filling up with angry posts and promises by many cruisers to show up this year, whether the event is sanctioned or not.
The Woodward Dream Cruise is not alone.
Earlier this month, organizers of Flint’s annual Back to the Bricks car show announced they were dramatically scaling back their annual classic car event.
