Oakland County orders bars, theaters and other businesses to cut their customer loads by 50%

Michigan Radio

Oakland County is putting restrictions on restaurants, theaters and gyms to try to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Oakland County has the largest number of diagnosed COVID-19 cases in the state of Michigan.

To try to reduce the spread of the disease, the county health division issued an order Saturday to reduce occupancy load by 50% at county establishments with a food service license.

Food service establishments include bars, church dining halls and banquet halls.

The order exempts healthcare facilities, long-term care, and grocery stores.

The order also limits occupancy load of entertainment venues and physical fitness centers to 50%.

Oakland County Health Officer Leigh-Anne Stafford says “strong measures are necessary to flatten the curve of coronavirus cases.”

The order takes effect Monday and runs through April 5.

Nine of the 33 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Michigan are in Oakland County.
