Fatal crashes down 75% over 5-day Thanksgiving period

Michigan State Police

Far fewer people died in traffic accidents over the Thanksgiving holiday period than last year.

A federal grant put dozens of extra Michigan State Police troopers on the highways between the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after.

Troopers were on the lookout for impaired, speeding or careless drivers, and for people not wearing seat belts.

Three people died in three separate crashes over the period, compared to 12 deaths last year.

This was the first year of a three-year campaign to reduce traffic fatalities by 10 percent.
