The Michigan State Police are investigating an alleged bar fight between two Flint city officials.
The fight between councilman Eric Mays and Mayor Sheldon Neeley’s Deputy Chief of Staff allegedly took place at a Flint bar last week. City police turned the investigation over to the MSP.
Eric Mays told reporters Monday night that he’s scheduled to meet with the state police Tuesday morning.
Mays accuses the mayor of protecting his aide.
“Have we got gangsters in city hall? Is Neeley condoning this?” Mays told reporters, adding that he’s asked for Deputy Chief of Staff DuVarl Murdock to be suspended.
The two men are telling very different stories about what happened last Thursday at Rube’s Bar & Grill.
Mays claims Murdock initiated the verbal exchange and knocked him to the ground. The councilman says he needed to go to the emergency room to have his injuries treated. Mays is contemplating a civil lawsuit.
The mayor’s office issued a statement claiming Murdock was protecting himself after Mays allegedly started the fight.
During his tenure on the Flint city council, Eric Mayshas had several run-ins with law enforcement, including arrests for impaired driving and pawning his city-owned laptop.
He’s also been kicked out of meetings and stripped of his leadership positions on the city council for a variety of incidents, ranging from belligerent arguments to once giving a Nazi salute to show his displeasure with the council president.
