Michigan's former health department director, Robert Gordon, has been nominated by President Joe Biden for a federal health position.

The White House announced his nomination for assistant secretary for financial resources at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

In early 2019, Gordon, a former Obama administration official, was tapped by Governor Whitmer to lead the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

He resigned abruptly in January, and later said Whitmer "wanted to go in a different direction," on pandemic policy.

Whitmer also recently declined to follow the recommendation of the state's chief medical executive, Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, to implement a statewide mask policy for schools.
