The U.S. Senate impeachment trial could affect there-electionof at least one Michigan congresswoman.
But she says her focus is elsewhere.
President Donald Trump's legal team is asserting that he did "absolutely nothing wrong" and is calling the impeachment case "flimsy" and a "dangerous perversion of the Constitution." The brief from Trump's lawyers was filed before arguments expected this week in the Senate impeachment trial.
It offered the most detailed glimpse of the defense they intend to use against Democratic efforts to convict the president and oust him from office. It is meant as a counter to a brief filed by House Democrats that summarized weeks of testimony from more than a dozen witnesses in laying out the impeachment case.
8th District Rep. Elissa Slotkin was part of a key group of moderate Democrats from swing districts who came out in support of impeachingthe president.
Slotkin upset a Republican incumbent in 2018.
Now as her re-election bid and the Senate trial of the president begin, Slotkin says she remains focused on health care, drug prices and infrastructure.
“The politics and the media will swirl, but I’m not going to stray from my mission,” says Slotkin.
Several Republican candidateshave launched campaigns to win the GOP nomination to challenge Slotkin in November.
Slotkin says “everything under the sun” could affect her re-election, not just what happens during the trial of the president in the U.S. Senate.
