A state board is giving a campaign to outlaw an abortion procedure another chance to prove it has enough petition signatures. Right to Life of Michigan wants the Legislature to adopt a veto-proof initiative.
The bipartisan Board of State Canvassers told the Michigan Bureau of Elections to draw a larger sample of signatures. That’s after an initial sample showed the signature campaign fell short.
Genevieve Marnon is with Right to Life of Michigan.
“A small sample size is not always statistically valid, and so drawing a larger sample provides a better range of validity, so we’re optimistic,” she said.
Angela Vasquez-Giroux is with Planned Parenthood of Michigan, which opposes the initiative.
“We expect we’ll have a new sample within the next couple of days and we will do the same thing we did with the last one, and we undoubtedly still find that it’s sloppy and there are a lot of problems with it,” she said.
Vasquez-Giroux also said the state should not bend the rules for one petition campaign and that the Right to Life drive should have to follow the same process as other petition campaigns.
