ArtPrize Winner Announced

Grand Rapids artist Chris LaPorte has won ArtPrize. His life-size drawing, titled, "Cavalry, American Officers, 1921" won him the top prize of $250,000. As Dustin Dwyer reports, the drawing is based on a, "1921 photo of Cavalry soldiers that LaPorte found in a Grand Rapids antique store." All of the more than 1,700 pieces of art entered in ArtPrize will remain on display through Sunday.

Snyder, Bernero Address Detroit Economic Club

The candidates running for Governor both addressed the Detroit Economic Club yesterday. Republican Rick Snyder spent much of his time talking about his upbeat vision for the state. Democrat Virg Bernero spent his time attacking, "big banks." Michigan Radio's Sarah Hulett was there, she says, "Bernero focused his wrath on the lenders that have had lawsuits filed against them for allegedly using falsified documents to foreclose on homes." The candidates will debate on Sunday night.

Smoking-Ban Violations Reported

Michigan's smoking-ban took effect on May 1st and there have been relatively few reported violations of the law. A new report finds fewer than 600 complaints have been filed with local health departments. But, that doesn't mean everyone is following the law. Michigan Radio's Steve Carmody reports 153 citations have been handed out and five food service businesses were forced to shutdown for failing to obey the law.
