Major Dudes salutes the music of Steely Dan and the 50 year anniversary of their debut album release, Can’t Buy a Thrill. Yes, it’s half-Century’s End, and if you get that Donald Fagen song reference you are a true Dan fan, and a person who will most assuredly not want to miss this show. If you don’t get it, no worries – there are reasons aplenty for joining us at Canton’s premier performance center, the Village Theater at Cherry Hill.
Major Dudes is an extraordinary 6 piece ensemble that brings a wealth of experience and talent to their interpretations of every Steely Dan top 40 hit (there were ten including Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Do It Again, Peg and Hey Nineteen), numerous excellent Dan "deep cuts", and every tune from their classic 1977 record, Aja. They are multiple winners (in 2019, 2020 and 2022) of the Detroit Music Award for Outstanding Tribute Band.
For this very special occasion, the Dudes will play five songs from Can’t Buy a Thrill and will have some added local talent along for the ride. For the first time, Major Dudes will have female background singers on hand for the big hits, and plans are afoot to have a number of Detroit-area musical luminaries join us for a few tunes. The names are TBA but trust us, they will rock you. We’ll announce who they are through various and sundry social media outlets as we lock ‘em in so look forward to that.
Also, we can’t help but notice the close proximity the show will have to Halloween. We’ll take a few minutes between sets to award prizes for the best interpretations of Steely Dan characters. So many to choose from – like Kid Charlemagne, Peg, Deacon Blues, Doctor Wu, Good King Richard, Hoops McCann, Jill St. John, ‘Retha Franklin, Mr. LaPage, a Gaucho perhaps, Babs and Clean Willie (couples only)…the list goes on. Be creative.
A special occasion like this requires a special venue and The Village Theater at Cherry Hill in Canton fits the bill perfectly. There are 400 comfortable seats in a premier performance center with great acoustics, lights, and visual displays. We aren’t messing around. Celebrating Steely Dan’s 50th birthday deserves nothing but the best.
