The employment rate for individuals in Michigan with serious mental illness increased in 2018.
That's according to a new report from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
The report shows there was a 30% employment rate for people supported by the state's Individual Placement and Support – or IPS – services. That’s up from 26% in 2017.
Under the IPS model people with disabilities can find resources, like technical training and access to employment specialists, to help them land jobs.
“Individuals who are receiving these IPS services are finding better jobs, more competitive jobs,” said MDHHS spokeswoman Lynn Sutfin.
According to MDHHS, there are currently 21 IPS programs across the state.
“There is assistance out there for these individuals that is allowing them to get gainful employment and also just having an impact on their lives,” Sutfin said.
