Governor Gretchen Whitmer wants to use more than $2 billion in federal aid to boost Michigan’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Her proposal, unveiled Monday, needs legislative approval.
The plan would allocate millions more to tuition assistance, including a program offering free community college to frontline workers.
Whitmer says that's key to developing the state’s workforce.
“Whether it's in skills training, or it's a two-year certificate or as a four-year degree, that is an important way we can invest in our people and make sure that we get a good-paying jobs and support our businesses who need skilled labor,” she said.
The proposal also sets aside millions for affordable housing, electric vehicle technology and brownfield development subsidies.
