A new DPS public boarding school could open in 2012

The Detroit Public Schools wants to open a public boarding school for the 2012-13 academic year.  But first the district  needs to find a charter operator to run the school.

Jennifer Mrozowski, a spokeswoman for the district, says the boarding school will serve high school students:

"You see public boarding schools across the nation and obviously private boarding schools that cater to students who need that sort of round-the-clock learning and strict disciplinary program. We’re looking for something that might be similar for students in grades 9 to 12. It is going to focus on high quality and rigorous college preparatory education for students who need a more caring and nurturing environment from morning till night."

Mrozowski says it’s still up in the air how many students will be enrolled, and how much it will cost to run the boarding school. She says the district will have more details once a charter operator is found.

The district is accepting charter applications here.

“The public boarding school is consistent with the district’s rigorous five-year academic plan, which aims to enhance teaching and learning for all grade levels and create Centers of Excellence in every school in every neighborhood,” said Robert C. Bobb, Emergency Financial Manager.
