A new culinary school opened its doors in downtown Flint today.
It’s part of the effort to revitalize the city.
Mott Community College’s Culinary Arts Instituteis located in the heart of Flint’s downtown. The 36,000 square foot space is the formerWoolworthsbuilding.
Business dean Stephen Shubert has shepherded the project during the past four years, beginning at the depth of Flint’s water crisis.
“We, along with all of the other community partners, have taken that on. We’ve been diligent about working through that and not focusing necessarily on the problem, but what’s the solution,” says Shubert.
The facility will have teaching kitchens and a public dining space connected to a baked goods café.
College officials say having a larger facility will enable MCC to increase the Culinary Arts program capacity to approximately 400 students, creating secondary economic impact.
Nationally, the restaurant industry is projected to grow by 1.7 million jobs by 2025.
