There’s a battle brewing in West Michigan. It’s a competition among building owners who want to cut their carbon emissions.
This battle is not a real knock-down, drag-out blood battle – it's more like a friendly wager for bragging rights. It’s a race to see which building can reduce the most energy use per square foot.
Cheri Holman chairs the U.S. Green Building Council’s chapter in West Michigan, which is hosting the battle.
“The winners will be based on percentage lost. So it’s a Biggest Loser-style competition,” she says.
Yes, Holman says, some buildings will be easier to improve than others, but unless you’re a complete energy-saving champion, there are ways to improve. Through the battle, the chapter will help businesses identify those things.
“Even if you don’t win, you’re going to be on the website and kind of be out there as someone – as the kind of corporation that is concerned about carbon emissions. So I encourage the buildings even if they don’t plan to win. And who knows, they might learn something.”
You’ve got a few more weeks to register your building to take part in the battle. Any buildings in Lansing, west and northwest Michigan and the Upper Peninsula can sign up.
