State officials investigating 2nd property of Electro-Plating Services owner Gary Sayers

U.S. EPA

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) says it's investigating potentially hazardous chemicals discovered at a Detroit property owned by Gary Sayers, who was recently imprisoned for violations of environmental laws at his company, Electro-Plating Services in Madison Heights.

Detroit Fire Department inspectors identified potentially hazardous liquids at the location, 5900 Commonwealth Street, on Friday.

A press release from EGLE says when the site was inspected in December as part of the probe of contamination that had seeped out of Sayers' Madison Heights facility onto the I-696 freeway, the substances were not discovered at that time.

EGLE says "personnel are en route to the scene tonight to assess the situation, determine next steps, and ensure the site is properly secured."

We will update this story as we learn more.
