The city of Lansing is launching an effort to coordinate programs aimed at improving the lives of young people, especially children of color.

Mayor Virg Bernero says the community must work together to provide better opportunities for children and young adults.

“So that every young person, particularly those of color, can believe and know that they have a bright future. That’s what we’re committed to,” says Bernero. “This is going to succeed because of the breadth and the depth and the scope of this coalition. It’s going to succeed because it is grass roots.”

The initiative’s backers hope by linking the efforts of a patchwork of religious, social service and other groups, they can improve the education outcomes and meet other needs of young people in Lansing.

The coalition hopes to attract hundreds of thousands of dollars in public and private funds to pay for social support programs for Lansing’s children of color.
