Jonathan Pommerville and Lisa Thompson live in Detroit’s Brightmoor neighborhood. While they view their street as home, others view it as an off-the-radar place to dump trash and drive off. Some also view it as a place to engage the services of prostitutes.
"I was tired of picking up condoms off my front lawn, picking up trash from people coming into the neighborhood that shouldn't be there dumping off their refuse."
In response to the actions of these “humpers and dumpers,” Pommerville and Thompson pull out their video camera.
“I was tired of picking up condoms off my front lawn, picking up trash from people coming into the neighborhood that shouldn’t be there dumping off their refuse,” Pommerville said. “That’s where I decided, you know what, I’m going to start taking back the streets.”
The first step in the couple’s effort to “take back the streets” is to go through the piles of trash. They use envelopes and pill bottles to figure out where it all came from. Then, they return the piles to the dumper and post a video of it all on YouTube.
