Downtown Lapeer reopens after gas leak

Authorities closed all of downtown Lapeer to traffic as police and fire crews investigate a gas leak.

Update, Thursday, May 30, 7:05 a.m.: The city of Lapeer has reopened its downtown area.

Officials lifted an evacuation order late Wednesday afternoon then re-opened the streets late Wednesday night.

Update, 9:11 a.m.:

The Lapeer County Central Dispatch tweeted that part of the area is being evacuated for safety reasons.

Original post 8:39 a.m.: The Lapeer County Sheriff's Office says police responded to a noise complaint at 4:30 Wednesday morning.

They discovered that gasoline from an unknown source had entered sewer lines, which caused several manhole covers to dislodge.

Lapeer County Central Dispatch tweeted to ask anyone who may have seen suspicious activity to contact the dispatch office.

The investigation is ongoing.

Lapeer is about 20 miles east of Flint.
