How will automatic federal budget cuts affect Michigan?

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The White House says Michigan faces about $140 million in losses if an automatic federal budget cut takes effect Friday, and U.S. Sen. Carl Levin says he's hopeful the deadline pressure will prompt Congress to raise money by closing some tax loopholes.

The Michigan Democrat tells MLive.com that the key to a deal this week lies with finding some Republicans who are willing to balance spending cuts and revenue increases.

The Obama administration released a state-by-state list Sunday that details some of what it says will be the effect of an automatic cut to the federal budget that Congress approved in 2011.

The cuts include $67.7 million in gross pay to 10,000 civilian Defense Department employees in Michigan and $42.2 million to K-12 and disability education programs in the state.

Here's a breakdown provided by the Obama Administration:

Michigan would lose about $140 million under the cuts.

Some examples :

- 10,000 civilian Department of Defense employees would be furloughed, reducing gross pay by $67.7 million.

- $14 million for Army base operations.

- $22 million in funding for primary and secondary education.

- $20.3 million for teachers and aides for children with disabilities.

- Head Start and Early Head Start services would be eliminated for 2,300 children.

- 2,490 low-income students would college financial aid, and about 1,300 fewer would get work-study jobs to finance their higher education.

- $5.9 million in environmental funding.

- $1.5 million for fish and wildlife protection.

-$1.7 million in funding for job search assistance, referral and placement.

- $2.9 million for substance abuse treatment.

- $944,000 for public health emergency preparedness.
