Flint Mayor Karen Weaver is touting what may be a key plank in her re-election campaign, a day before she’s expected to announce her plan to run again.
On a noisy factory floor, Weaver joined local education and business leaders to discuss a new job training program, calling it “a very special announcement.”
Mott Community College is teaming up with Android Industries to find local applicants to fill dozens of new jobs at the company’s south Flint manufacturing plant.
The mayor says during her three and half years in office, Flint has seen more than 2,000 jobs created in the city. Weaver credits that, in part, to the city’s water crisis.
“We know that when we have a crisis that economic opportunities come,” says Weaver.
The mayor is expected to launch her re-election campaign on Tuesday.
Weaver was elected during the height of Flint’s water crisis in 2015. She also survived a recall election in 2017.
Weaver’s campaign war chest is about five times larger than what she spent winning the office in 2015.
