Republican Mike Detmer has announced that he will challenge Democrat Elissa Slotkin to represent Michigan’s 8th Congressional District. He joins Nikki Snyder in the Republican primary for the 8th district.

Detmer currently lives in Howell, and was born and raised in Michigan. He worked as a loan originator for Nova Mortgage in Bloomfield Hills and worked his way up to vice president of the company. His family moved to Kansas, then to Florida, and relocated to Michigan in 2015. He then began working as a general sales manager of a car dealership and is a licensed real estate agent.

Detmer says his biggest priority is responsible government spending, especially when it comes to tax dollars.

“One of the biggest problems I see with government is government really abuses people's tax dollars. It's easy to spend or misspend other people's money. Government really should be run somewhat like a business: you've got to have accountability, you have to be fiscally responsible.”

He says the plans and visions he had for the state legislature are absolutely doable on a national scale in congress.

“We rolled out a bold plan to eliminate personal income tax in Michigan, reduce corporate tax, and also reduce some of the job-killing regulations that burden Michigan companies, in the effort to not only help the companies that are already here, but also entice other businesses from other states to come into Michigan.” He says he plans to create a plan inspired by Newt Gingrich’s Contract With America, but instead, a “Contract With Michigan.”

Detmer says constituent input will be the biggest part of his campaign.

“Accessibility and bold ideas have been forefront in our campaign thus far, to the point that people were saying ‘Mike, you really ought to step it up, we need that in Washington.’ I want to provide a bold plan of common sense reasonable ideas that can be accomplished, and provide an unprecedented level of access and communication with the constituency.”

In addition to issues of taxes, Detmer’s website lists gun rights, infrastructure, and banning abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected.

Fellow Republican Nikki Snyder, who serves on the state board of education, is also running for the 8th district seat.
