A Birmingham lawyer has announced his campaign to unseat Democratic incumbent Haley Stevens. Eric Esshaki is a Republican running for Michigan's 11th Congressional district. He says Congress is broken.

Esshaki’s top priorities are health care and helping grow the middle class. A former nurse, Esshaki says he saw the healthcare system first-hand.

"Right now we have politicians who care more about talking points and rhetoric with no focus on detail. And I think that as an attorney and as a former nurse the details matter - and the details matter in our policy decisions," Esshaki says.

The Republican's campaign slogan is "Fixing Politics. Solving Problems." He says that’s why he’s running.

"I think that we need to focus on health care, I think we need to focus on the economy, I think we need to focus on education. And quite frankly, at a higher level, I think we need to focus on having a discourse that's civil," Esshaki says.

Esshaki will need to beat Canton Republican Whittney Williams before he can face Stevens. In 2018, incumbent Stevens flipped the historically Republican 11th District. Esshaki says voters were looking for a change and Steven has not brought it.
