Michigan Radio announces weekend and weekday evening schedule changes

Beginning on Saturday, July 4, Michigan Radio will be introducing a revised weekend and weekday evening on-air schedule. This includes the addition of a new show to the line-up and revised times for several other programs.

Weekend changes/Revised times

Beginning July 4, Michigan Radio will no longer be airing Live from Here. American Public Media recently announced that they are discontinuing production of the live music program hosted by Chris Thile at the end of the current season on June 27.

In its place on Saturdays at 6 p.m., Michigan Radio will add a repeat broadcast of the popular NPR news quiz show Wait Wait…Don’t Tell MeThat will be followed at 7 p.m. by It’s been a Minute with Sam Sanders, a casual, fast paced look at the week’s news hosted by former NPR political reporter Sam Sanders

In place of the Sunday evening broadcast of Live from Here, Michigan Radio will air Hidden Brain at 9 p.m. followed by On Being at 10 p.m.

Michigan Radio will also be revising broadcast times of several other weekend shows beginning on Saturday, July 4. It’s been a Minute with Sam Sanders will also be heard at 11 a.m. on Saturdays while This American Life moves to 2 p.m. To increase weekend news coverage, the station will add a Saturday broadcast of the BBC Newshour at 4 p.m., which will air immediately before Weekend All Things Considered at 5 p.m.

Weekday evening changes

Beginning Monday, July 6, Michigan Radio will make two changes to the station’s evening line up. Michigan Radio’s weekday talk show Stateside will now be heard at 9 p.m. rather than 10 p.m. This is in addition to the show’s 3 p.m. broadcast. This will give listeners who miss the afternoon broadcast the opportunity to get more in-depth statewide news at an earlier time in the evening.

Taking the 10 p.m. slot will be a new program, 1A Plus, a one-hour condensed, digest version of the day’s full 1A program. This “best of” the 10 a.m.-noon live show will include updates where applicable. On that same day, Jenn White will take over as the new host of1A. Her name will be familiar to many Michigan Radio listeners since she was the local host of All Things Considered on the station from 2010 – 2016. As the show’s new national host, White will moderate the daily dialogue and champion Americans’ right to speak freely. 1A Plus will be replacing On Point which will be leaving Michigan Radio’s schedule.

"I'm thrilled to welcome Jennifer White back to Michigan Radio's airwaves,” Michigan Radio’s Program Director Zoe Clark said. “Jenn’s ability to create civil conversations and tough dialogue - particularly in 2020 - is more important than ever. It’s heartening to know that she will be at the helm of discussions – and offering insight - about the most salient topics facing our country.”

All of the changes noted will take effect beginning Saturday, July 4, 2020.  You can view Michigan Radio’s updated program schedule here
