SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) - Demolition has begun on one of downtown Saginaw's oldest buildings.
Crews started work this week to bring down the 145-year-old former Yak's Deli to make way for a new work force services center.
It's one of the last remaining structures on the approximately 2-acre plot that's scheduled to be used for a one-story, 20,000-square-foot Michigan Works center.
Site supervisor Keith Dodd tells MLive.com the process could take several weeks or even months because of the building's 15-foot-deep basement, which contained debris and as much as 8 feet of water.
Spokeswoman Kristen Wenzel says Michigan Works provides assistance to about 30,000 people in the Great Lakes Bay Region.
The Yak's Deli building was built in 1867 by Aaron K. Penney, who opened a men's apparel and furnishings store there.
