Emerging artists in Michigan may wonder: "How do I get the attention of an art critic? How do I get someone to write about my work if I haven't gotten to the point where I can mount a show?"
Lori Waxman, art critic for The Chicago Tribune, understands the challenges for artists trying to get honest feedback of their work.
In a rare event, Waxman will review any artist's work, no matter the skill level.
She'll be in Hamtramck the weekend after Thanksgiving as the "60 wrd/min art critic."
And to top it off, the review process itself will become performance art. Waxman will spend 20 minutes writing a review of fewer than 200 words, all in real time, and people are invited to view this on a monitor.
“So anybody who's around, the artist or audience, passersby, is welcome to read along as I’m writing, or as I’m correcting what I’m writing, or as I’m making a typo, or thinking the wrong thing and deleting it and backtracking … and then when it’s done it gets printed up and we post it up in the space for the duration of the performance and then after the fact everything will be published by the Detroit Metro Times.”
The upcoming performance will take place Nov. 27-29 at 9338 Campau Avenue, Hamtramck.
