Once-controversial battery plant plans to double workforce this year

Lithium-ion battery maker LG Chem is planning on doubling the size of its workforce in Holland this year. The plant makes batteries for the Chevy Volt and Cadillac ELR.

LG Chem is expanding to make batteries for a new customer. But a company spokesman won't say who the new customer is.

The company went through some controversy a couple of years ago. It had to pay back some of the money it got from the federal stimulus package because it was wasting some of it, according to a federal report.

The company hopes to have 300 workers, double its current staff, by the end of year.
