Afghan Women's Film Festival

Afghan Women's Film Festival

The Oakland University Afghan Women's Film Festival celebrates its closing event with a screening of HAVA, MARYAM, AYESHA at Cinema Detroit, followed by a panel discussion about the movie and Afghan refugees in Michigan. Hava, Maryam, Ayesha is the first independent Afghan film entirely shot in Kabul with the director, actors, and actresses all living in Afghanistan. Three Afghan women from different social backgrounds, living in Kabul, are facing big challenges in their lives. HAVA, a traditional woman whom no one cares about, is living with her father and mother-in-law. Her only joy is talking to the baby in her belly. MARYAM, an educated TV news reporter, is about to get a divorce from her unfaithful husband but finds out she is pregnant. AYESHA, an 18-year old girl, agrees to marry her cousin because she is pregnant by her ex-boyfriend. For the first time in their lives, each of them has to solve her problem by herself. $1 from each ticket sale will go to Freedom House Detroit. Our screening will be followed by a Q & A with special guests: Afghan actress AREZO ARIAPOOR; FARIBA PAJOOOH, a journalist formerly stationed in Kabul; YUSUF SULTANI and ZAHRA NAZARI of the Afghan Association of Michigan; ELIZABETH VASQUEZ, COO, and NUSRAIT HUSSAIN, senior attorney, from Freedom House Detroit, the organization for asylum seekers and refugees. This is an IN-PERSON show! MASKS are required at all times except when eating and drinking, and VACCINATION CARDS will be checked at the door.
