Coercive & Deceptive Interrogation: Why Innocent People Confess or Take a Plea Deal

Coercive & Deceptive Interrogation: Why Innocent People Confess or Take a Plea Deal

Nearly 12% of the exonerations listed on the National Registry of Exonerations involved a false confession. The Innocence Project has determined that 29% of the cases it has overturned due to DNA testing involved a false confession. Of these cases :
• 49% of the false confessors were 21 years old or younger at the time of arrest
• 31% of the false confessors were 18 years old or younger at the time of arrest
• 9% of the false confessors had mental health or mental capacity issues, known at trial

Why do innocent people confess or take a plea deal? One contributing factor is the type of interrogation technique used by law enforcement.

In this online Community Conversation, a panel of experts and people directly impacted by these techniques will discuss what coercive and deceptive interrogation techniques are, the harm they cause, and possible solutions to interrupt the harm.
