As part of our ongoing series about The James & Grace Lee Boggs School on Detroit's east side, reporter Zak Rosen introduces us to Christopher Gaston in today's State of Opportunity feature story.
Christopher is in the third grade. And he is one busy third-grader. Enrolled at The Boggs School since it opened last September, Christopher has taken up Scrabble club, African drumming, and creative writing. He's so busy that Marisol Teachworth, The Boggs School’s program director and co-founder, says, “It’s tough to get Christopher to leave the building every day."
Amid all of the reporting on Detroit's trouble, The Boggs School is carving out a space for kids and parents who see a future in the city.
Zak co-produced the video above with director and editor Andrea Claire Maio. You'll see how Christopher starts his day, and what it looks like to go to a school where students are called "solutionaries."
Or, if you prefer the auditory experience, hear more about Christopher and The Boggs School on our State of Opportunity website.
