Today on Stateside, Upper Peninsula writer John Smolens tells his story "Where Art Thou, Marquette?" 

Smolens recently retired from Northern Michigan University's English department. He now writes full-time in Marquette.

"Occasionally I'm somewhere other than Michigan, and I find myself talking to someone, lets call him Fred, who hasn't a clue where Marquette is located. Fred takes a stab guessing it's Wisconsin, confusing the small city of approximately 21,000, with Marquette University in Milwaukee. No, Marquette, Michigan is farther north, in the Upper Peninsula..."
