No. 16 Michigan State will play No. 18 Washington State Thursday, Dec. 28 at the Holiday Bowl in San Diego.

Three of Michigan's college football teams are headed to bowl games. The selections were announced Sunday.

Michigan State will play in the Holiday Bowl. The No. 16 Spartans and No. 18 Washington State will meet in San Diego on December 28.

The University of Michigan will ring in 2018 in Tampa, Fla. The Wolverines will face South Carolina in the Outback Bowl on New Year's Day.

As the Detroit Free Press noted, that selection left some MSU players and fans unhappy. The Spartans had a better record than Michigan and beat the Wolverines in their annual rivalry game. The Wolverines also finished the season out of the Top 25.

Despite all of that, Michigan ended up in the Outback Bowl. While not one of the premier bowls, its placement on New Year's Day gives it more national prominence than the Holiday Bowl.

Central Michigan is in the Idaho Potato Bowl. The Chippewas had an 8-4 record and will face Wyoming on December 22.

This is Central's fourth straight bowl appearance. They've lost in the previous three.

This year, Western Michigan is on the outside looking in. The Broncos were bowl-eligible after they finished with a 6-6 record, but didn't receive an invitation.

This is the first time Western has missed a bowl game since 2013.
