Marygrove College in Detroit will close for good this December. The school announced Wednesday it had informed its staff and 305 students of the decision. It's citing financial reasons.
Detroit Free Press columnist Nancy Kaffer has been covering the story. She spoke to Michigan Radio’s Morning Edition host Doug Tribou about her article, “Detroit's 92-year-old Marygrove College to close in December.”
Marygrove was founded by the sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1905 and moved to Detroit in 1927. The school closed its undergraduate programs two years ago.
Marygrove President Elizabeth Burns says the college has accumulated much debt. She said it has reached an agreement with Oakland University to accommodate students who are within a year of finishing their degrees and will make similar arrangements with other schools as needed.
