The state is urging the Benton Harbor community to take a survey about the city’s school district.
The brief questionnaire is all about what the community sees in the school district and what they would like to see.
You can find it on the state’s Community Engagement Advisory Committee’s website. The deadline to take the survey is January 8th.
“We want to hear from you,” said Deputy State Treasurer Joyce Parker, committee chairperson. “The Benton Harbor community has a voice at our table. Please don’t wait. Take the survey today!”
The long struggling school district has been working with the state to find ways to improve. That’s after the Governor’s office recommended closing down the city’s main high schoolback in May.
The state’s idea was to close Benton Harbor High School due to poor academic outcomes and financial issues, as the district was more than $16 million in debt.
Months of community backlash occurred before the state eventually decided to keep the high school open with some stipulations.
But now both parties, the state Treasury Department and the Benton Harbor Area Schools board, are working together to improve the school district.
