Democratic State Representative Abdullah Hammoud was the top vote-getter in the Dearborn mayoral primary Tuesday with 42.01% of the vote.
In a speech to volunteers and community members, he described his decisive victory as a group effort.
"We're running because we believe we can tackle the tough issues. We're running because we believe, we have the political courage to tackle things like the the high property taxes and the poor air quality, to tackle the reckless driving and the speeding and our crumbling infrastructure. Because people want change."

Hammoud got the most votes of the seven candidates on the primary ticket by a wide margin. He will face off against Wayne County Commissioner Gary Woronchak, who got 18.45% of the votes during the general election in November.
If elected, Hammoud could be the first Dearborn Mayor who is Arab American and Muslim American.
