Battle Creek homeless shelter giving thanks for the community's response

The Haven of Rest, Battle Creek, Michigan

The people who run a homeless shelter in Battle Creek are giving thanks for the way the community has responded to their need this Thanksgiving.

The Haven of Rest shelter was among the hundreds of thousands of utility customers that lost power for several days earlier this month, after a severe windstorm blew through the state.

Without electricity, days-worth of meat and produce spoiled in the shelter’s refrigerators.

Daniel Jones is with Haven of Rest.   He says Battle Creek residents have been dropping off turkeys and other food at the shelter after hearing of its plight.

“There’s been a lot of turkeys donated this week,” says Jones, “It’s really phenomenal. It speaks a lot to the Battle Creek spirit. It also speaks a lot to the holiday spirit here in town.”

On a normal day, Haven of Rest serves about 250 meals to Battle Creek’s homeless.
