Representative Tyrone Carter (D-Detroit) has tested positive for COVID-19, according to state house officials.
A press release from House Democrats reported Thursday that Carter is in good spirits and appears to be recovering.
Carter is the first member of the Michigan Legislature to test positive for COVID-19, according to Gideon D'Assandro, spokesman for the House Republicans and for House Speaker Lee Chatfield.
D'Assandro said all House members have been notified of the situation.
In seperate written statements, House Speaker Lee Chatfield (R-Levering) and House Democratic Leader Christine Greig (D-Farmington Hills) each expressed their concern for Carter and his family and sent prayers for his speedy recovery.
"We must all remain vigilant in practicing social distancing and do our part to stop the spread of this virus," said Greig. "Anyone who is experiencing symptoms should follow the CDC guidelines and contact their medical provider."
"I'm also taking this opportunity to remind all members and staff of the House to follow the CDC guidelines," said Chatfield. "Anyone who was within six feet of Rep. Carter during the incubation period should monitor themselves for symptoms. Anyone who does show symptoms should seek testing with their local healthcare provider and maintain strict social distancing. Following these procedures will help us all get through this time safely and get back to normal as soon as possible."
Carter is serving his first term in the Michigan House and represents a portion of the City of Detroit, Ecorse, and River Rouge.
