A nonprofit is offering free help to immigrants who need to renew their application for the federal deferred action program.
The U.S. Supreme Court decided in June not to strike down the program, known as DACA.
But recipients still need to renew their status every two years.
Fernando Urbina is with Immigrants Like Us, an organization that helps people fill out their DACA renewal applications.
“We have been very busy lately,” Urbina says. “In the last two to three weeks alone, we have had over 100 individuals enter our site for help with DACA renewals.”
Immigrants Like Us offers free help with filling out other immigration forms as well, and it’s open to anyone in the U.S., not just Michigan residents.
But Urbina, who is currently a student at Harvard, is originally from Paw Paw, in Southwest Michigan.
“Being from Michigan myself, it is very important to me that we reach out to individuals from Michigan who might need our free services,” Urbina says.
As of March, there were about 5,250 DACA recipients living in Michigan, according to the federal government.
Immigrants Like Us offers free help filling out DACA renewal forms on its website, which includes an app with suggested resources.
