President Joe Biden will name replacements for a judge and a federal prosecutor after their resignations following the presidential inauguration.

U.S. Attorney Matthew Schneider was appointed three years ago by then-President Donald Trump.

Schneider will join a private law firm after leading multiple corruption prosecutions as metro-Detroit’s federal prosecutor, including convictions of UAW officials and Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith.

It’s common for presidential appointees to leave after a new president is sworn in. Schneider says it’s time for him to move on.

“Well, it’s commonplace for whenever there’s a new administration for the administration to get to pick whatever leaders in law enforcement that they want, and I felt that I wanted to give the Biden administration an opportunity to do that,” Schnieder said.

Schneider blasted Trump’s final-day decision to commute the sentence of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. He called Kilpatrick an “unrepentant criminal who has never once shown remorse for the horrendous crimes he committed against the people of Detroit.”

“He pillaged that city and he robbed that city, and so he deserves to be held accountable for that,” says Schneider

Deputy U.S. Attorney Saima Mohson will serve as the acting U.S. Attorney for Michigan’s eastern district and could be a candidate for the nomination.

U.S. District Court Judge Victoria Roberts just announced she’s going into semi-retirement, which will give the new president the chance to name her replacement as well.
