House Republicans in Lansing approve a bill to restrict students’ access to school bathrooms. Democrats say the bill is a distraction deployed by the GOP to use transgender teenagers as political pawns while the state budget remains unfinished less than a month before the October 1 deadline to avert a partial government shutdown.

A bill that passed the Republican-led state House would restrict students to using public school bathrooms matching their sex assigned at birth. Democrats leading the Senate say it's dead on arrival.

“To explain it in terms that even a kindergartener would understand, boys use boys’ bathrooms and girls use girls’ bathrooms,” said State Representative Joseph Fox (R-Fremont).
