Michigan State has fired football coach Jonathan Smith two years after hiring him. Athletic director J Batt announced the move Sunday. The Spartans lost eight of their last nine games, finishing 4-8. Smith's overall record at MSU was 9-15, with just 4-14 in the Big Ten. Smith is owed more than $30 million, and the school will need to spend millions more to find a replacement.

Michigan State athletic director Alan Haller is leaving the school and deputy athletic director Jennifer Smith and men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo will serve as co-interim ADs. University president Kevin Guskiewicz said Haller’s last day will be May 11. Guskiewicz did not disclose the reason for Haller’s exit.
